How to Write a Great Cover Letter

When applying for a job, a strong cover letter can really help your application stand out. Here’s some cover letter advice to help you land your dream job.

Do Your Research

Find out about the company’s customers, competitors and work culture. You should also know which skills are needed for the job. You can then use this information to show how your skills will be useful, and why you’re the perfect choice for the company.

Keep It Short

Your cover letter shouldn’t be longer than one page, and around half a page is ideal. The letter should have about three paragraphs. The first should explain why you’re interested in the job and how you heard about it. The second should say why you’re right for the job, and give examples of your past experience. In the final paragraph, give your contact information and thank the reader for their time.

Be Original

It’s a good idea to write a new or updated cover letter for each job that you apply for. You should also avoid clichés like, “I’m a team player,” or “I think outside the box”. As many other applicants will have written the same thing.

Proof Read

Always proof read before you send it. There may be hundreds of cover letters being sent in for the same job, so even a small mistake can make you look bad compared to everyone else. Look for grammar and spelling mistakes and check the company’s information so that any names you use are correct. Consider asking a friend or family member to read it too.
